By Zlata Vuksanović-Macura
The new publication, entitled “Social Housing Opportunities and Challenges: Perspectives from Denmark, Germany, Portugal and Serbia,” developed within the DASH project, was released in February 2026 and published by ARL – Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association.
This book is a compilation of analyses of social housing systems in each of the four countries at both the national and local levels. It examines how different European countries respond to growing housing affordability pressures, demographic change, welfare restructuring and the financialisation of housing markets. Through analyses of national housing systems and local practices in Aalborg, Tübingen, Braga, and Čačak, the book highlights both the diversity of housing models and the common challenges facing European cities today. Among the key topics discussed are:
- social and public housing provision;
- housing affordability;
- governance and financing models;
- demographic and economic pressures;
- urban inequalities and spatial segregation; and
- local strategies for inclusive urban development.
This publication reflects the collaborative spirit of the DASH project and presents interdisciplinary perspectives from researchers and practitioners working in the fields of housing policy, urban planning, governance, and social inclusion.
The book is edited by Sónia Alves, Hans Thor Andersen, Els Keunen, and Zlata Vuksanović-Macura.
In addition to comparing different housing systems and policy approaches, the publication highlights the importance of European collaboration and knowledge exchange in addressing contemporary housing challenges.
